At the ABIM 2021 event, speakers of the European Commission (COM) provided an update regarding the EU regulation amendments concerning microorganisms used in plant protection products, in the context of the Farm-to-Fork Strategy implementation. In their presentation, they highlighted the significance of a weight-of-evidence approach for the biological properties which have an impact on human health, residues, E-fate and ecotoxicology (e.g., growth conditions). They also noted the importance of the assessment of secondary metabolites to determine the safety of these microbial active substances.

As of this week, COM has begun the consultation period for the following amendment documents: new uniform principles for evaluating and authorising productsnew data requirements for approving active substances, new data requirements for authorising products, and approval criteria for microbial active substances. The feedback period is open until the 23rd of November 2021.

According to the above-mentioned latest update from COM, the proposals are scheduled for voting SCoPAFF during Q1 / 2022 and should be applied after adoption by the European Parliament / Council from Q4 / 2022 onwards.

Our team of biopesticides experts will continue to follow the latest developments to anticipate issues during data generation and dossier preparation for EU approvals accordingly. Please contact Joachim Rumbolz if you require regulatory support for your microbial active substances.
