End of a season

The beginning of autumn signals the end of our honey bee season 

For most of our trials, we will determine the overwintering success of the honey bee hives after their exposure to the test item in spring and / or summer 2011.

Now, the control, as well as the treatment hives, will be prepared for overwintering. They are treated with formic acid for protection against varroa mites and fed.

Also, depending on the study design, the last residue samples of honey bee products (nectar, pollen, wax, honey) are taken. Before start of overwintering, samples of the worker bees are collected from each hive for analysis of potential viruses

• ABPV = Acute Bee Paralysis Virus
• DWV= Deformed Wing Virus
• KBV=Kashmir Bee Virus
• SBV= Sack Brood Virus

Analysis are performed by our cooperation partners LAVES (Niedersächsisches Landesamt für Verbraucherschutz und Lebensmittelsicherheit, Institut für Bienenkunde, Celle) and LIB (Länderinstitut für Bienenkunde Hohen Neuendorf e.V.).
