Aquatic Invertebrates

Sidebar Image

The toxic effects of plant protection products (PPPs), pharmaceuticals and chemicals to aquatic invertebrates are tested in accordance with the latest OECD, OPPTS and JAMAFF guidelines

Tests can be performed static, semi-static or for some species also in flow-through test design. The requirements of the OECD guidance document 23 on aqueous-phase  aquatic toxicity testing of difficult test chemicals are also considered and implemented in the test designs.

Effect on Daphnia

Studies are usually performed with Daphnia magna. Test organisms are cultured in-house and available during the whole year. Several additional species are available on request.

Acute Testing

  • OECD Test No. 202: Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test
  • Ecological Effects Test Guidelines OCSPP 850.1010: Aquatic Invertebrate Acute Toxicity Test, Freshwater Daphnids
  • JMAFF Test Guidelines (2014): Daphnia acute immobilization studies (2-7-2-1)

Chronic Testing on Reproduction

  • OECD Test No. 211: Daphnia magna Reproduction Test
  • Ecological Effects Test Guidelines OCSPP 850.1300: Daphnid Chronic Toxicity Test

Effect on sediment dwelling larvae

Test organisms are cultured in-house and available during the whole year.

Acute Testing

  • OECD Test No. 235: Chironomus sp., Acute Immobilisation Test

Chronic Testing

  • OECD Test No. 218: Sediment-Water Chironomid Toxicity Using Spiked Sediment
  • OECD Test No. 219: Sediment-Water Chironomid Toxicity Using Spiked Water
  • OECD Test No. 233: Sediment-Water Chironomid Life-Cycle Toxicity Test Using Spiked Water or Spiked Sediment

Effect on Lumbriculus

  • Test organisms are cultured in-house and available during the whole year.
  • OECD Test No. 225: Sediment-Water Lumbriculus Toxicity Test Using Spiked Sediment
  • OECD Test No. 315: Bioaccumulation in Sediment-dwelling Benthic Oligochaetes

Effects can also be assessed in an acute toxicity test.

Chronic testing with Chironomids and Oligochaetes are routinely run with non-radiolabeled and radiolabeled test material. The accompanying analytical determination is performed in-house.
