Aluminium in Toys – Final Scientific Opinion Published
After the consultation period, on the 20th October 2017, the European Commission’s independent scientific committee - SCHEER (Scientific Committee on health, Environmental and Emerging Risk) - published the final opinion on tolerable intake of aluminium with regards to adapting the migration limits for aluminium in toys, as laid down in the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC.
SCHEER recommends a tolerable daily intake (TDI) for aluminium of 0,3 mg/kg bodyweight/day.
In their final opinion, they have also calculated the resulting migration limits for aluminium from toys as below:
- 2250 mg aluminium/kg of dry, brittle, powder-like or pliable toy material
- 560 mg aluminium/kg of liquid or sticky toy material
- 28130 mg aluminium/kg of scraped-off toy material
SCHEER also recommends exposure to aluminium from toys to be minimised since the exposure from other sources (i.e. food) may already exceed the TDI.
