Attestation of conformity of drinking water hygienic suitability of products

Eurofins is accredited for product certification in accordance with the recent certification procedures described in the UBA Recommendation (based on new Evaluation Criteria KTW-BWGL effective March 21, 2021) for issuance of "Attestation of conformity of drinking water hygienic suitability of products" following system 1+ requirements and accredited product testing lab for the "Evaluation criteria for products in contact with drinking water" (KTW-BWGL).

Understanding the change and getting prepared

Under § 17(3)(4) TrinkwV in the German. Drinking Water Ordinance, the UBA evaluation criteria document (KTW-BWGL) shall be mandatory 2 years after its publication, meaning from 21 March, 2021.

From this date, companies must ensure that for the construction or maintenance of installations for the production, processing or distribution of drinking water, only such organic materials are used that meet the requirements of the KTW-BWGL.

The recent UBA recommendation describes relevant procedures for demonstrating conformity to these evaluation criteria, KTW-BWGL, through the issuance of material-specific conformity attestations following system 1+ requirement and simplified procedure that are to be performed by an accredited certification body.

The type of quality control tasks in system 1+ requirements are the initial product inspection and sampling of test specimen, type testing of the product, verification of factory production control (FPC) annual audit and testing.

For products made up of different components (assembled products), this means that as a general rule from the UBA recommendation, every component produced from a single-layer or multilayer material shall have a separate certificate of hygiene suitability for drinking water. It is thus convenient to readily prepare conformity attestations for all individual components beforehand.

What we offer

To help customers meet these requirements, we are accredited to provide the full suite of services (testing, inspection and certification):

  • ISO 17025 accredited laboratory for testing according to KTW-BWGL, Elastomer guideline and EN 16421
    • Including the composition assessment (formulation check)
  • ISO 17020 accredited inspection body to meet the initial product sampling and annual audit requirements in system 1+
  • ISO/IEC 17065 accredited certifying body to meet requirements in the UBA Recommendation as certifying body.

Our procedure for the attestations of conformity builds on the principle to simplify what is complicated. Basically, we divide the efforts taken into certification procedure ABC.

  • Assessment

First step is the performance of an initial assessment where it is necessary to determine the product certification scope and testing and audit requirements.

  • Basis of Conformity

Next step is to carry out all the required tasks outlined in the assessment in order to obtain conformity attestation in accordance with relevant certification scope and procedure.

  • Certification

Upon fulfilling the basis of conformity, the attestation of conformity (product certification) is issued.
