Collaborating with L’Oreal to study the efficacy of sunscreens

Around the world, the use of sunscreens has been promoted as part of a healthy routine to prevent skin cancer and premature skin ageing. Many companies have been using technological advances and new UV filters to produce sunscreens that are effective and safe to use. In fact, companies are introducing innovative ingredients to sunscreens to create products that provide not only protection against UVR but also contribute to skin hydration and anti-ageing.

In this journey, Eurofins CRL, part of Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care, has collaborated with L’Oreal Research & Innovation to carry out a photoprotection clinical study to evaluate the impact of UVR on skin barrier properties and the efficacy of novel formulations. The methodology and outcome of this study was recently published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology, as “Efficacy of Ceramide-Containing Formulations on UV-Induced Skin Surface Barrier Alteration.”

We provide knowledge and experience in photoprotection methodology through customised protocols to aid companies like L’Oreal to improve the overall skin protection properties of their sunscreen products. Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care has a team of experts actively involved in standardisation committees, and provides a broad range of testing services for all types of sunscreen products through 13 testing laboratories worldwide including Europe, Australia and the USA.

What does the future hold for packaging?

Packaging is a vital part of ensuring the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products for human use and, by extension, the commercial success of a product. It’s essential to find the best packaging solutions which take into account the relevant technical and environmental aspects and requirements.

Eurofins is the perfect partner to support clients’ quality control and risk assessment management procedures in the design, review and development of packaging, offering:

  • Regulatory and Safety Assessment Cosmetic Packaging
  • Analytical testing, including physical and chemical testing, analyses for toxic substances, food contact testing, eco-design in packaging, stability testing, and compostability testing
  • Certification, auditing and consulting

Our packaging tests are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of clients and to cover a wide variety of complex cosmetic formulas and packaging materials (including, but not limited to, virgin and recycled plastics, glass, metal, cardboard, refillable, reusable, and bio-based materials).

Our highly skilled experts and network of international accredited laboratories (DINCERTCO, ISO 17025, etc.) are on hand to ensure that your packaging does not compromise the safety, quality or efficacy of your products.

Blue and infrared lights: a complementary in vitro and in vivo testing strategy

Several studies on skin ageing suggest that in addition to UV radiation and air pollution, the exposure to infrared light and high energy visible light is likely to have an impact on the skin, contributing to skin pigmentation and skin ageing through oxidative stress. Concerns about the potential damage to the skin health and appearance are rising among consumers worldwide:

  • Infrared (IR) are involved in skin ageing and in carcinogenesis; they are responsible for an increase in skin temperature and lead to the production of free radicals and metalloproteinases-1 in the dermis. Effective protection against infrared can be achieved by adding absorbing optical filters in the IR range, free radical scavengers and / or photon reflection.
  • The harmful effects of blue light appear to relate to prolonged exposure by penetrating skin deeply and negatively impact all layers (production of oxidative stress in skin, contribution to free radical damage as well as premature photodamage, hyperpigmentation, inflammation and decreases in immunity). Some mineral filters can block blue radiation. Another approach is to add antioxidants to the cosmetic formulas to limit accelerated skin aging and damages caused by BL.

Eurofins Cosmetics & Personal Care has been at the forefront of pioneering both in vitro and in vivo testing strategies for infrared and high energy visible lights.

Whatever your claim (IR and / or BL protections), Eurofins offers complementary and validated in vitro or in vivo protocols to highlight the benefits of your product.
