Is Bisphenol P a safe alternative?

On January 2018, the substance 2,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)-4-methylpentane, also known as Bisphenol P, was added in  ECHA’s candidate list of substances of very high concern (SVHCs) following the proposal from the Swedish Chemicals Agency (Kemikalieinspektionen – KEMI).

This substance is used as an alternative to Bisphenol A (BPA) which can be found, for instance, in polycarbonate bottles and food can coatings.  Some countries, such as France, have taken the decision to eliminate or reduce BPA in products. Last year, the EU reduced migration limits for BPA from 0.6 mg/kg to 0.05 mg/kg in food contact plastics. The migration limit of BPA in toys was also reduced from 0.1 mg/l of BPA to 0.04 mg/l.

Now Bisphenol P is subject to further assessments by ECHA to present to the European Commission a proposal to add it to REACH Authorisation list.
