For a Child’s Smile

Pour un Sourire d’Enfant (For a Child’s Smile) is a non-profit organisation that has been operating in Cambodia since 1995 and helps children suffering from extreme poverty by re-integrating them into society and creating a safe and healthy environment for them to study and learn a trade. In 2000, PSE was awarded the French Human Rights Prize by the French Republic.

In 2020/2021, the Eurofins Foundation donated to the PMI programme, which protects the health of babies and mothers and fights against malnutrition in babies. Most children benefitting from the organisation’s education and assistance programmes belong to families living in extreme poverty in Phnom Penh and surrounding areas. Many originally came from rural parts of Cambodia, hoping to find work and a better life in the capital.

The Eurofins Foundation’s support enabled For a Child’s Smile to:

  • Assist with the birth of 24 babies during the year. Mothers were well advised, had all the information required about their pregnancy, and knew which hospital to visit to deliver their babies.
  • Support 16 mothers with their newborns, including teaching them how to breastfeed, manage their savings to buy good food, and care for their babies and stimulate them. The babies grew up healthy, gaining 300 to 500 grams every 15 days.
  • Provide counselling to 89 families by calling them when it was impossible to visit their home because of COVID-19.
  • Provide food to 61 children who were suffering from malnutrition.

In 2021/2022, the Eurofins Foundation supported For a Child’s Smile’s Family Living Improvement Project (FLIP), a programme aiming at providing social and economic empowerment to the most vulnerable Cambodian young people and adults living in the Phnom-Penh area through skills training and employment opportunities.

As of August 2022, 162 students benefited from the FLIP training and 32% of the trainees have completed one complete session and have acquired a new skill.

44% of the “Parents or Families’ participants” and 27% of the “Youngster/young adults” participants successfully completed the training.

The FLIP team has also cultivated links with with potential employers and met with 83 new companies to assess a collaboration and internship projects to place programme students.
