Iracambi

Amigos de Iracambi (Iracambi) is a non-profit organisation located in Brazil’s Atlantic Forest, a biodiversity hotspot that has been experiencing increasingly severe droughts, brought on by centuries of environmental degradation and exacerbated by climate change. This has led to the loss of many water sources, and urgent action is now needed to protect the forest’s biodiversity.

In 2020/2021, the Eurofins Foundation provided a grant to the organisation’s Forests for Water Program (F4W), an ongoing project that fosters and practices community-led reforestation, helping to improve livelihoods, encourage sustainable farming practices, increase soil integrity, reduce pollution in freshwater systems, and build stronger community relations among local farmers.

Eurofins has supported Iracambi in achieving several goals: 10,000 trees have been planted (with a survival rate of 89%) and maintained, and 100 environmental leaders from across Brazil have been trained and graduated from Iracambi’s online programme.

Additionally, this project facilitated Iracambi’s participation in two public hearings about mining in the Serra do Brigadeiro mountains, at both municipal and state levels, to provide the population with a greater understanding of the consequences of mining.
