The Australian Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants (ALEC)

Established in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that contributes to society through research, learning and teaching and engagement.

The Australian Laboratory for Emerging Contaminants (ALEC) is a research partnership of environmental science professionals committed to understanding emerging contaminants in contemporary society. ALEC facilitates multi-disciplinary research, sets the agenda for emerging contaminants in the Asia Pacific region, and provides solutions to some of the most challenging problems associated with chemical exposure, risk and impact.

In 2020/2021, the Eurofins Foundation provided a grant to the research team working on “Novel Analytical Techniques for the Determination of Emerging Contaminants”. The project aimed to protect the environment through better analytical techniques and determining emerging issues.

Thanks to the research grant, the team at ALEC made substantial progress in producing reliable, high-quality results. These methods can be adopted by researchers and regulators, with the potential to change regulation and approaches to environmental regulation in Australia and provide additional environmental protection and monitoring opportunities, while being relevant to professionals working in the water, soil and air sectors.
