Phenylbutazone Testing

Sidebar Image

Phenylbutazone ("bute") belongs to the group of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID), a group of pharmaceutical actives providing pain-relieving, fever-reducing and, in higher doses, anti-inflammatory effects.

NSAIDs are used to treat or prevent diseases or tranquilise during transportation or before slaughtering. Phenylbutazone is often administered to horses for pain relief from infections and musculoskeletal disorders.

Food Regulation for NSAIDs and phenylbutazone

Within Europe, residues of NSAIDs in food are harmonised in Regulation (EC) No. 37/2010. Animal and tissue specific maximum levels are listed for a range of NSAIDs. Phenylbutazone is not approved for animals reared for human consumption, no maximum levels are established resulting in a zero-tolerance for phenylbutazone in the food chain.

Analytical testing of phenylbutazone

Our experts from the Competence Centre for Veterinary Drug Testing have long-term experience with the testing of veterinary drug residues for a large variety of food matrices.

We offer testing for phenylbutazone as a single substance as well as a comprehensive NSAID testing protocol covering phenylbutazone and 8 additional NSAIDs using tandem HPLC-MS.

A qualitative high-resolution LC-MS/MS testing method for the phenylbutazone metabolite oxyphenbutazone complements our analytical portfolio for NSAIDs.
