CPSIA
Your industry, our focus
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) is a significant product safety law in the U.S. that concerns the safety of children products. Enacted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in 2008, CPSIA provides specific regulatory and enforcement tools to address the presence of various hazardous chemical substances such as lead, phthalates, toy safety, third-party certification and labelling of children products.
A wide range of products intended for 12-year-old or younger is covered in CPSIA, including textiles/garments, footwear, home furnishing, toys, school supplies, and others. For suppliers and buyers handling childrenswear, kids shoes, bedding or any soft goods, it is important to note that under CPSIA, it is required that any children's products should:
- Comply with all applicable children safety rules
- Be tested for compliance by a CPSC-accepted laboratory
- Have a written Children’s Product Certificate
- Have permanent tracking information affixed to product and packaging
Failure to comply with CPSIA requirements could lead to product recalls, civil and criminal penalties.
Eurofins Softlines & Leather’s CPSC-accredited laboratories can help buyers and suppliers of children products to U.S. market in CPSIA compliance, from textile and footwear testing, risk assessment, labelling review to fault analysis.
