Chemical Testing for Toys & Childcare

Chemical hazards in toys and childcare products are among the major concerns of regulators and market surveillance authorities due to the danger these represent to the children and the environment.

Within the Eurofins network of companies, our portfolio of services covers chemical testing for toys and their materials to determine their compliance against the different toy safety regulations and standards that may apply worldwide to these products.

Some of the standards included in our service scope are:

  • EU Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC
    • EN 71-3 for migration of certain elements
    • EN 71-4 for experimental sets for chemistry and related activities
    • EN 71-5 for Chemical toys (sets) other than experimental sets
    • EN 71-7 for finger paints
    • EN 71-12 for determination of N-Nitrosamines and N-nitrosable substances
    • EN 71-13 for Olfactory board games, cosmetic kits, and gustative games
  • ASTM F963 for the safety of toys
  • CPSIA
  • ISO 8124-3 for migration of certain elements
  • China GB Standards and requirements on the chemical content of toys

On top of the above, we offer services of compliance analysis against other additional regulatory or market requirements that may apply to toys, such as the Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH), Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC, and California Proposition 65, etc.

With our expertise in the toy supply chain, we can assist customers in developing their toy testing programmes to best suit their needs and requirements.

Testing and assessing the soluble element migration is just as crucial as the chemical substances testing mentioned above, as babies and children often tend to stuff the toys into their mouths. We can test on various soluble elements such as antimony, arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury, boron, nickel, organic tin and zinc for regulations of key consumer markets:

  • ASTM F963-17
  • EN 71-3: 2019 + A1: 2021
  • SOR/ 2011-17
  • AS/ NZ ISO 8124.3: 2012

With our expertise in the toy supply chain, we can assist customers in developing their toy testing programmes to best suit their needs and requirements.

Chemical Testing for Furniture & Décor

It is also essential to assess the chemical risks of furniture and home décor goods properly to address the health and safety risks to consumers. We can provide different chemical tests for furniture, including

  • REACH Annex XVII – Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006
  • Regulation (EC) 850/2004 ‘Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)
  • California Proposition 65 (CA Prop 65)
  • Chemical of High Concerns to Children (CHCC)
  • The National GB Standard of China
  • Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)
  • Organic Compounds Testing - Azo dye (2002/61/EC), Phthalate content (2005/84/EC) PBBs and PBDEs contents (Flame retardant products), Formaldehyde
  • Heavy Metals Testing – Cadmium content (91/338/EEC), Total nickel content, Nickel release (EN 1811), Chromium VI content, Arsenic content

Why is chemical compliance crucial?

Proper chemical compliance through toy testing will allow you to:

  • Fulfill stringent regulatory requirements in key consumer markets to protect vulnerable consumers. Failing to stay compliant with the toy safety regulations could lead to product recall and brand damage, and in some cases, law courts could be involved.
  • Manage your supply chain to better understand your toy products' chemical composition, and prevent risks to the workers in factories and end consumers.
  • Fulfill the mandatory proof of compliance testing that your product may need to enter several markets worldwide.

Our internationally-accredited laboratory network can offer you various services and solutions related to chemical testing and compliance.

We offer broad access to different markets.
